How do you respond to a reader-friend when they say, "I just don't get poetry?"

What's to get?
The same you get from fiction. Well, somewhat. Sometimes. Both visual & auditory rewards.


Regarding food, I don't get cream. Except with ice. And of course, with Stevens' "The Emperor of Ice Cream."

    Picture it all over me
    then wipe it all over you
    of course the next step would be

    not be hard to get

    Seems the senses always know the way
    even if we dodge the weeds on the walkway
    a piling on of rose and scratchy willows

    smacks this and that into our air
