Does a poet always have someone in mind?

Is it the nature of poetry to be human – even the most minimal of work, the most abstract language?

I’ve heard it said that every cook cooks with someone in mind. This my grandmother told me. Also, “A meal never lies.”

  1. Her hands on the counter
waiting to know what to do
    what shoelace to tie
    what sandwich needs more mustard
    what kid needs a push

Weird to think she held my dad
when he was too small to carry the pail
and not smart enough to get someone
    else to do it
and not yet ready to carry a gun

The fishing rod in the old picture
must have caused a laugh or two
    full as it could be
with river trout or wads of grass
and all the kids on a visit

Why take them to the worm store
when the bait could be shiny metal
it's a getaway in the old black car
down a beer with the guys in the dust
and no one who rides can tell anyone else
