What advice does the refrigerator offer a poet?

Open me.
Take what you can use.
Make something fresh of the left behind.

A fine meal, a fine poem always knows
what has been taken out. What is only hinted at.

Must we heat up everything that falls our way?
As if in effigy of a favorite relative
the hats are flying off the shelf

    once so carefully arranged
they make a madness out of the simple floor

and all the silly ribbons smile at the child
