Why today begin celebrating poetry?

Such sweet irony, don't you think, that the first day of National Poetry Month & April Fool's Day coincide. Holy fools for words & weird food.

  1. Hypotheticals (continued)

What a fool I have been
    exclaimed the itinerant worker
not to have seen the foreman's
    attempt at subterfuge.

How awkward it would have been
    to have accused the workers
    and their families of blasphemy
when all along they were deceived

and the forces held up against them
raining hard, turning disk to mud,
switching seasons in the middle of the night
wind blowing our heads astray, our hearts out

how could I have not seen the force
    with which circumstance can collide
with fate and destiny and wayward actions,
how one step cannot veer from another
