Imagine sushi without soy, wasabi, ginger. Now, what's the equivalent necessity in a poem?

enjambment
surprise
ripeness

  1. (H. cont.)

Abandoning the idea of a gondola
left to weather by the lake
    he munched on the luncheon
    and considered inclement fortunes

    In the hallway, intuitive strangleholds
    were gathering to watch him--
spies perhaps from the factory foreman?
    Awhisper, then it's gone.
