Pepper. How do certain words pepper a poem?

With a ping
and something a pang.
Unmistakable,
necessary.

Have you seen pepper mixed with flowers: rose, calendula, lavender & cornflower petals. More of curiosity than a sentence.

"I haven't got the faintest idea
about the brooch" she says but
I saw her take it and pocket the pin--
Is it up to me to say so
    spill the story bright?

    You needn't call the diner
for the special will be cold
We could walk the dusty road
    to another place but why
    not just choose another dish.
Non one expects her to be perfect
but on she goes about the district
    busy and alone
