Is inquiry the linchpin for poetry?

Sorry if you missed Mark Doty's reading at SF Zen Center last evening. If you were there you recognize the rhetorical question. Otherwise read his FIRE TO FIRE, New and Selected Poems.

By the way, cooking is inquiry (of taste) and satisfaction (of hunger). Not much is rhetorical about food, I’d say.

  1. Now Just a Minute

when you were young did you look at
    your plate
what they put on it, did you think
it could turn out to be a symbol,
    a projection, a prophecy?

    Spaghetti, no way
    Potatoes, some time
A simple salad and a shook up dressing?
    who could ever tell
    it might all add up
    or fall apart

    big They people
    in charge of everything
    we ate
